Computer Aided Design

Since 2006...

I incorporated my business to take on my first ever contracting role, at that time I lived between Slough and Yeovil. Yeovil was home to one of, if not the biggest helicopter manufacturing company in the UK. This is where my learning role started to divert into the realms of mechanical visualisation and a lot of UI / UX design, as well as writing simulation content for pilot training courses.

CAD data

Where to start...

CAD data is often plagued with problems, poor geometry can be prevalent when data is transferred into a polygonal format. This now results in parts of the product being rebuilt, and this is especially true if you plan to wrap nice textures onto a part.

So it can be hours worth of detecting, identifying and splitting out parts into manageable components.

Even if you are lucky to get an ultra clean mesh, you will most likely need to create a 2D unwrap so get that nice flow, or even model the part in subD format.

It ain't always easy, it does take time!

The environment

Having worked with MODO for many years, and adopting that workflow it means that components can be cleaned very quickly (compared to other DCC's which I will not name).

Whilst in clean up mode, I can quickly split parts, animate them to create an initial look and feel. I also will take CAD data and export it for real-time visualisation purposes.

Did you know I built a tool in Unreal Engine called Project ERA?

Real-time RTX visuals that often took many hours to render can now be made interactive, and you don't need to be a graphic designer to create new and exciting visuals!
